The installation manual for DNN have prerequisit for a couple of configurations eg

Configuration A: Laptop or Desktop Computer
Web Server: Windows XP/Vista/Windows 7 desktop computer with ASP.NET 2.0 or newer and IIS 6.0 or newer Database Server: SQL Express 2005/2008 running on the same computer

All of them require IIS6.0 as minimum although IIS6.0 is not available for XP.  What is the solution?

I haven't attempted this in a while, but as long as you are running DNN 5.1.4 or older I don't see why you would need IIS6.

DNN 5.2 requires .NET 3.5 and SQL 2005, so perhaps there's also an IIS6 requirement thrown in there that I missed, but I believe that 5.1.4 and all older versions of DNN should work fine on XP/2000 as they both have IIS 5.1/5

First, IIS 6.0 does exist on XP, but only 64 bit XP Professional.  Second, the docs are wrong.  And third, you can't run a production  site on Windows XP due to OS limitations so why would you want to install on XP anyway?

if you want to install DNN on a local web server for testing or development purpose, Win XP pro works fine. make sure to have free XP Pro IIS Admin from www.jetstat.com installed for easy management of web sites (xp limits 1 web site per server running at a time).
