is there a standard manner in which to identify and track inbound URLS to my site by adding suffix codes?

for example - i may have affiliate sites out there directing traffic to my site - i would like to give them an link to my site such as:

http://mysite.com/?affiliate=NPMA

where NPMA is the name of the affiliate.  then, i would like to be able to use a report somewhere in DNN to identify all the general stats about visitors referred by NPMA, hits, uniques, day/time of week, month, quarter, etc.  essentially form a demographic profile of all visitors to the site from the link NPMA.

i am fairly new to DNN so any pointers in the right direction would be helpful.

thanks.

I just did a test in a new DNN 5.1.4 and here is what I did and what I found.

Setup

  1. Login as Host
  2. Go to Admin > Site Settings
  3. Scroll down and expand Advanced Settings > Host Settings
  4. Make sure you have configured the Site Log History (days) set (not 0)
  5. Click Update to save

Find Affiliate Id

  1. Logged in as Admin or Host go to Admin > User Accounts
  2. Find a User you want to test/use as an Affiliate
  3. Click the Edit pencil next to the User
  4. In the User Information page you will see something like (Id: 3)
  5. Note the ID (in this case 3) because that is the affiliate id

Using the Affiliate ID

  1. In a browser (logged in or not) enter your site URL and add ?affiliateID=[num from above]
    (example site.com?affiliateid=3)
  2. Press enter to go to the site

View the Affiliate Requests

  1. Login as Admin or Host and go to Admin > Site Logs
  2. Affiliate Referrals should already be selected, if not select it
  3. Click Display
  4. You will see the referral you just made

I hope this gets you going in the direction you are aiming for.

Robert is correct in his answer to setup your affiliates as Vendors in your site, and you'll be able to track the links across.

If you're interested in SEO for your site, don't forget to set up a canonical link tag excluding the ?affiliateID querystring parameter in your site settings, so that your inbound affiliate links all pass pageRank to the original url.  Each different affiliate ID linking to the site has the possibiltiy of creating duplicate content in the eyes of search engines.
