Thanks for the advice - you don't know of an example I could see on how to implament this - could I add the code to a skin?

I don't know of a specific example, but if you open up the HTML module's ASCX files you will likely find it right there.

I don't think this is something you could add to a skin

Open the appropriate .ascx file located specifically for the module that is calling the rich text editor and append the following command to the end of it:

Choosemode="false"

Example:
