I have downloaded and installed DNN 5.1.4 using a new local SQL Server 2008 database following the published installation instructions.  On the same local SQL Server instance I also have a backup copy of my live DNN 5.1.1 database that is used by by live site.  That backup database was downloaded from my host provder server.

I would like to have the new locall DNN instance point at and use the live site's local backup copy instead of the new database that was created during installation.  THis will let me evaluate new features locally.

Are there config settings that I can change to make this happen?  (Running XP and IE7)

Thanks

As part of your local install you can change the local web.config to point to your desired local database (i.e., the backup of the live site which you have installed locally ... you do have it restored/reattached into a database on your local SQL server right?).

However, it will upgrade your database if you use the 5.1.4 website files.  I'd consider downloading and using the files from 5.1.1 unless the purpose of your testing is to test an upgrade.  But then I'd download a copy of the live files too, then install the 5.1.4 upgrade over top of that local copy.

That's scarce on details I know but I'm assuming you are familiar to some degree with this.

Thanks Brian.  I thought I had tried what you suggested but apparently not.

I went back and edited the web config to point to my local DB (bakup) and it worked  -- well, sort of.

Now when I type the localhost\<local site name> in the IE address bar, I get re-directed to to my actual, on-line site, not the backup.  (address bar changes to actual site)

Is there another setting that I've missed?

Al

I'm not sure but I think you need to add the "new" site to the portal aliases and then remove the original.
