I've been looking at the Users Online data for my production and sandbox sites.  It looks to me like there is a bug or two in this module.  (I'm running DNN 5.1.4)

There are two tables: AnonymousUsers and UsersOnline.  I'm currently accessing the site using multile browsers.  I'm logged in as Host and also as a normal user, plus 2 other browsers accessing as Anonymous.  The count of guest users jumps from 0 to 10 to 2 to 11.  This is a non-published site.  The URL is hidden.  I don't know how there can be 10 or 11 anonymous users on it.  When it shows only 2 that seems correct.

The count of UsersOnline changes between 0, 1, and 2, depending on when I look.  There are two actual users logged on, so it's also broken.

usersonline data is an estimation at best, since it works with a timeout (20 minutes i think). Due to the disconnected nature of any web application, the best we can do is estimate by using a timeout. So while there can be errors in the module, it is inherently impossible to display exact data.... (actually all site statistics applications that i know off work in a similar way (ie: using a timeout)

Erik,

I understand about the timeout, but how does that explain seemingly random values?  On a private (sandbox) website It jumps from 0 to 10 or 11.  No one knows about this URL.  This seems more like a bug to me.

Perhaps if I understood better how it works.  I'll try to find time to dig into the code.

Sorry for the question if it sounds dumm, butt this time out you mentioned is the time you set for users online on Host Settings->Advance config-> Other configurations?

Thank you.

yes, this is the time limit taken into account by the scheduler job before purging a user from usersonline.
