How can I make a deleted page return a 404 error?

The way Google indexes pages, if I delete a page then the old link simply results in the top-most page being displayed in DNN 3.2.2.

In order to get Google to remove the listing, I need the page to return an 404 error.

An alternative would be to redirect the page, but the problem is that eventually, I'll end up with dozens of old pages just hanging around to try to handle deleted pages for search engines - not a desirable situation.

Anyone tacked and solved this problem?

Dave

Thanks for posting this question, I'm looking at the same problems since I upgraded my site in Feb, I still have some pages that are going back to the home page and so for the interim on some, I've actually just setup an area on my site of unwanted pages which redirect to the correct ones and then I've tried some admin only pages, so it returns to home page but not had much success.

It's very frustrating, but I have got the google sitemap working and I've found that's been helpful to a certain extent.

I'll ask a couple of people and see if I can't get some more ideas.

One [painful] thing you can do is add an entry in the SiteUrls.config file for the deleted pages that points somewhere else. This will have to be above the current entries, tho, to ensure your deleted pages are handled before the standard URL mapping entry is reached.

Even worse is if a moduleID changes or is deleted.  There doesn't seem to be a way to catch it and when it gets indexed an internal server error is logged.  There are two entries that also get generated in the log file.

This has been killing me since I upgraded the Gallery module from 3.10.04 to 3.0.11 and the moduleid changed also.

I also saw a Custom 404 module from Slalom Services yesterday. Figured I'd post a link. I've never used it, but it might be worth a peak.
