One thing I've noticed here is most refer to it as development and support... with little attention given to documentation though it is mentioned.

From a user perspective, 90% of the support I've required has been due to either poor and unclear documentation or lack of information available (eg. does or doesn't it do this).

Some modules don't need a lot and I use a few of the Ventrian ones which are clear to use and the help is there which has clearly answered everything I've needed. Whereas Catalook has plenty of documentation but it is not clearly written, skims over some parts and completely leaves others out. I find I need support just to find out things that could and should have been documented.

Where does the line get drawn on needing to provide support and covering the cost of that, and providing full and clear documentation?  Not to get into those that just don't read documentation (I see that with my own work) but having it covered adequately surely must reduce the amount of support required significantly.

Good point! Documentation is always the last to suffer.. an afterthought.. I dont know many developers who like writing it ;)

I tried to use online wiki's forums etc. as a selfdocumenting method but this still can not replace a dedicated user manual + admin guide.

Again - I think this boils down to planning then - if you are going to spend 30 days developing and then 10 days documenting it nicely then build this into your pricing/licensing! Thats 10 days more work for the develop and should be charge for in the module cost.

Documentation is definately a PITA on the developer side. It is time consuming. I'm surprised more developers don't use Camtasia screen video's for documentation - it would be faster. Not quite as good as written documentation but good enough in most cases.

You can also add building/maintaining your web site and building the snowcovered listing page to the list.

If Camtasia's price is an issue, TechSmith the makers of Camtasia makes a free similar tool called Jing. There are other free similar tools on the web.

Documentation on module programming is scattered around the web but if you want a single resource, I recommend 'Professional Module Programming' book. The link is on this page to the right.

Fantastic info in this thread... I do also think that just like Microsoft if DNN corp would hand out much better dev tools the success would be much greater for the DNN corp and its platform ... the lack of easy development slows down everything ...
