We installed successfully DNN 5.0 and we were adding skins and modules without a problem.  But yesterdaywe began receiving the following error on our DNN website :

This site is currently Unavailable
Please check back later

We can't seem to get the site working again.  IIS shows the website status as up and running.

The only thing I can recall is that we attempted to backup the DNN database on SQL Express, and shortly afterwards

we started receiving the above error message.

My configuration is pretty straight forward:

MS Server 2003 sp2, SQL Server express 2005, IIS 6.0, ASP.NET 3.5

When I check the status of the DNN database

Has someone else experienced this problem?

A more important question is what is the best way to do backup and restore that works and takes less than a few hours for our entire dnn website, short

of doing full image backups of the server?

Thanks in advance for replies...

Larry

Larry, most of the times, a web application "hickup" can be solved by restarting the application pool.

Besides, I strongly suggest upgrading to latest DNN version (5.1.4 atm, while 5.2.0 still suffers some issues, which will be ironed out in DNN 5.2.1 soon), for there are a number of security items and other bugs fixed.

Hi Sebastian,

Thanks for the reply. We will upgrade to 5.1.4. We are early enough in the process that we can start over with the install.  What we want to do is remove the current website and install 5.1.4.  I have a few questions:

1. Can we uninstall the current DNN site by first removing the DNN website from IIS mgr, then deleting the DNN directory?

2. Are there any registry entries or ASP.NET assemblies we need to remove or worry about?

3. What is the best way to backup/restore a DNN website?   We really need to have some confidence that we can restore are DNN site in case changes made cause the site to fail?  I know there are few modules which claim to backup a site, but we haven't tried at any yet.

4. How do check to make sure the DNN site is connecting to the SQL Server Express?  We use SQL Mgment Studio, but you have to attach to the DNN database which may disconnect from the DNN server?

Thanks again in advance

Larry

1. you can simply upgrade by unzipping the downoaded upgrade package into  your DNN installation folder, hierarchcally, overwriting existing files.

if you want to restart from scratch, stop the web site, clear the DNN installation folder, remove the database and create a new blank one and reinstall

2. no registry keys or anything like this

3. Backup your database inside sql server and backup your files, idally by using scheduled jobs. on your own server, you don't need DNN backup tools.

4. I always prefer to use the "grown up" connection string, using an attached database. you need to create a blank database first and grant dbowner permission to the swl server user being specified in your connection string.
