Several months ago I upgraded from DNN CE v4.9 to DNN CE v5.1.1. Ever since then logged in users who selected 'Remember me' when logging in (which should keep them logged in for 1 week in the portal) are getting logged out within an hour, sometimes within minutes, the time varies, but it sure never reaches a week.

I've been investigating this for quite a while without finding a solution. However I now see that the Log Viewer stopped recording several key events the exact day  I upgraded to v5.1.1. Events that are now no longer logged in the Event viewer include:

  • Login success
  • Longin Failure
  • Login Superuser
  • New User
  • Module updated
  • Password sent success
  • Password sent failure
  • Skin package created
  • Tab created
  • Tab updated
  • (...and others I guess but I stopped doing checks there...)

Does anyone have any ideas as to what is going on? According to the change logs for v5.1.2, 5.1.3 and 5.1.4 there are (as far as I can see) no fixes introduced that address a problem such as the above. I remain at a loss! All insight / ideas would be appreciated.

You should upgrade to DNN 5.1.4 and later to 5.2.1, when available, due to security issues fixed.

You may specify the events to be logged in event viewer, when selecting "Edit log settings" and activate the event types you'd like to see.

To specify the duration of the persistent login cockie, open your web.config file with a text editor, search for PersistentCookieTimeout and specify e.g. 20000 for 2 weeks.

Thanks Sebastian.

Well that is strange. I went into the "edit log settings" page as you adivsed and, yes, I see that all the events are set to 'false' with the exception of five events. This was not the case before the upgrade to v5.1.1 (I can still see events that were logged right up to the upgrade, which then were no longer logged after the upgrade). Does an upgrade to v5.1.1. automatically change all events, except 5, to 'false'? Strange...

The duration of the persistent login cookie has been about to a PersistentCookieTimeout of 10000 seconds for over a year, so I know that is not the issue. I just have to will see if an upgrade to v5.1.4 or 5.2.1 sorts the PersistentCookieTimeout problem out.

persistent timeout only has an effect, if users don't click "logout".

I remember, that in one version of DNN 5, all events had been turned on by default and this got corrected lateron, maybe this is still included in the upgrade logic.
