Hi,

when you're in a forum you have two options to reply.
one option is beside the "quote" button and leads me to believe that if you use this "reply" button then you will reply directly to the post so that the reply will be in a sub-hierarchical thread.
the other option is the "reply" button at the bottom which leads me to believe that you will reply to the original post.

for some reason, option one is not working; the quote option works fine. and the manual doesn't seem to speak to this option.

There is no logical issue, if you use the reply button in a specific post it will become the parent post of the post you are creating. When you click the reply button above or below all posts in that view, you are replying to the first post in the thread (and thus it is the parent post). The manual doesn't speak to this.
