Hello :)

Okay, its my first attempt at a DNN5 skin from scratch.

I followed the instructions. Event the ones in the link below:

http://www.howtodotnetnuke.com/Tutorials/tabid/120/smid/481/ArticleID/46/t/Converting-a-CSS-Template-To-a-DotNetNuke-Skin/Default.aspx

the only difference from the instructions above is that I did not use a table in the html.  I used Divs instead.  the HTML shows fine directly in a browser.

The Skin extension is created, Installed for use. there are no errors.  The skin shows as available in the Extensions list.

But when I try to set it as the default skin for the site from the host login, it is not in the dropdown for skins.

I am a real noob at this so be gentle....

does anyone have an idea?

I would check to see where the skin files were placed when installed.  Did they end up in portals/_default/skins, or did they end up in portal0/skins?  The first would be available for any portal, the second would be installed as a portal skin for that portal only.  I would imagine the latter would not be visible on the host settings page because it is not a host level skin, but an admin level skin.  That may be the problem.  Check on the Admin->Site Settings page and see if you can assign the skin from there, or even check if the skin shows up on the Admin->Skins page.  If that is the problem, it sounds like you didn't want it installed as a portal skin, but as a regular skin available to all portals and you'd want to move the files over to the portals/_default/skins folder to make them available from any page on any portal.  That would be the most common way for installing a skin.

In DNN5 when packaging a skin, you can specifiy which directory to install the skin and what name to give the skin, in the components section for the skin.  That might be a place to check where the skin files are being installed and why they aren't available (if they were installed into a directory that dnn does not check for installed skins, has to be one of two paths: portals/_default/skins or portals/0/skins where "0" is the portal number for the portal you are working with).

Hello

No, the files where in the portals/_default/skins.  I uninstalled everything, deleted the folder and reinstalled everything.

This time the Skin showed up and I am able to select it.  I must have skipped a step somewhere.

But now I have another interesting problem.  The CSS file is not in the header.  When I parse the skin, the log shows that the css file is process as expected.  But when a I open the DNN site and select the skin, it shows, but without any CSS being applied. So I looked at the source and found that no link to the css file is being generated. Is there another step I might be missing?

And yes, the file is in the right place.

Ibrahim
