OK I'm finally starting to understand portals in 4.0.3 being a nuke newbie.

I see that if I create portal X under DotNetNuke_2 (main virtual directory I setup) a subfolder called X exists with a default.aspx file.

I can see this portal behaves pretty much like a stand alone website.

On my windows XP Pro setup I see the DotNetNuke folder as:
http://localhost/DotNetNuke_2
and X portal as
http://localhost/DotNetNuke_2/x

Going to the portal it redirects thus:
http://localhost/DotNetNuke_2/Default.aspx?alias=localhost/dotnetnuke_2/x

Fine in my development environement... (although I would like to improve on this).

My question is how do I set up this portal with a friendlier URL when it goes live? I'm gonna need something better when in gets on the main server. I guess I could alias the first part of the URL but how could I cover up http://localhost/DotNetNuke_2/ altogether with a decent URL that would persist? I basically would want the sites to look as if they are not related to each other.

Many thanks

Alex

Just add a FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name) as the portal alias.........when setting up my installation, I used the default alias which is localhost....upon going live, I just added my FQDN......a portal can have a number of aliases

I am currently designing a DNN4 portal for my school district.  I plan to make a parent site for the district office, and a child site for each school.  What do I need to do so that I can add a FQDN as the portal alias?

My goals is for the web directories to look similar to this with subdomains.

District office       http://district.com

School 1             http://school1.district.com   and/or    http://district.com/school1

School 2             http://school2.district.com   and/or    http://district.com/school2

Currently, the web address for each child site home page is very long and I need to make it simple for teachers to type in their own school webpage URL.  It’s probably very simple, but I just have not been able to find the answer in my Google searches.

Thanks,
