There seems to be a problem using Link Captions on imported URLs, regardless of whether you import an XML or CSV file.

I have some files (.DOC and .PDF) that I am linking to. I can access them using the relevant URL. I place that URL in a cell of a .CSV file and import it into Form and List. I change the column from Text to URL and insert a Link Caption. When I try to access the file in the list, it doesn't download the file. It just goes to a blank page indicating the file is unavailable. The problem is that it isn't converting the link to the actual URL. If I don't use a Link Caption it links to the asset properly--even with "Abreviated URL" checked. Now, if I edit a row and simply click the Update link without changing anything, that fixes the problem and I can access the URL with the Link Caption feature enabled. If I export the list, make changes and re-import, any row that I had previously accessed and Updated will continue to work with Link Captions enabled.

Is anyone aware of a fix to this aside from simply not using Link Captions?

It is not a bug but a feature* which prevents that  linkclick.aspx is used to link to unkown urls. I would go with a calculated column instead which pulls out the url and creates a link with caption.

*Edited: A core feature, not FnL

I think I may have found a better solution:

1/ Set the column as Text

2/ Place link HTML tags around the column contents in the XSLT
