Hi.

I'm running DNN 4 and have a localhost main portal called dnn4.  There are several parent portals that I used to be able to get to which are not responding.  For example, localhost/dnn4 starts the main portal just fine.  But I had a portal aliased "dnnhistory.com" and another called "dnnthird.com"

The link to those portals are on the home page of dnn4.  Clicking either link brings up Google, which which gives me a "DNS error - cannot find server on a page that says "this link appears to be broken."  Entering http://dnnhistory.com also brings up Google, and "localhost/dnnhistory.com" gives me a "the page cannot be found."

The 0 portal appears to be working correctly, and allowed me to add two new parent portals, but I can't reach them either.

Help!???

what do your portal aliases look like? if you add "dnnhistory.com", this is a parent portal and will only show up if it is properly pointing to your web site in name server and web server (both!). you can locally use a domain name by adding it to /windows/system32/drivers/etc/hosts files as localhost alias and might need to add it in IIS web site configuration as additional host header value.

Hi, Sebastian,

Thank you so much.  Adding the domain names to the etc\hosts file as 127.0.01 worked  but I am now getting a windows prompt for name and password.

I remember now adding the domains to etc\hosts before when I was working on these sites, about a year ago, and I remember doing something else to get rid of the password prompt, but for the life of me I can't remember what it was!!''

Could you provide instructions for adding it to IIS web site configuration?  I've been searching for the solution to the password prompt online, but had no luck.

Thanks so much!!

Kay

in IIS web site configuration, make sure to enable anonymous and forms authentication and disable all others.

Add the host 127.0.0.1 to Internet Explorer's Intranet Zone in the Security tab so IE will pass authentication.  Beyond that though, your hosts file should point to the IP of your server, not the localhost address.  And that still won't fix access from off your system,  Check your DNS records for where the problem is.
