It is not clear to me how I can upgrade to 4.0.3 from 4.0.2 ? I assume that I have to run a SQL script and replace all the source code. But is there a manual or is there maybe just a zip-file you can upload?

Good question, nobody want to mess up their DNN portal.  The following is directly out of the DNN Q&A.

Q.  Is it easy to upgrade to a newer version of DNN?

A.  Yes.  First, backup your database before upgrading to a new version.  Unzip the newer version over the old, and the application will automatically execute the necessary database scripts.

I hope that this was enough information.  I am currently running 4.0.1, but I am just going to wait another 4 weeks for the release of DNN 4.1 which will have lots of fixes.  Good luck,

After I did the 4.0.3 install over 4.0.2 as the above mentioned FAQ describes, it appears to want to keep entering "install mode" after I navigate to the page.

I did it once, and everything went fine. I received an object reference not set error on the first load, but that was because it was a little slow in processing, and I refreshed the page. When I refreshed, it loaded as 4.0.3.

However, the next day, I went back to the page and it did the install script again (saw the URL at the top show it was in install mode) and I received the same object reference error again. Once I refresh, all is well again, but why would it keep intermittently trying to install itself from time to time?

In the meantime, I copied back my 4.0.2 install.

I have installed without any problems. I had to turn the blowery module of, that was all. I have seen the reinstalling thing you describe as well, but not during my upgrade. I have seen it lately when I was playing with subdomains and virtual directories. However, it did not reoccur when I stopped playing. Could you post your error here?

I do not have the specific text of the error message as I have currently uninstalled 4.0.3 back to 4.0.2, but I know it was a "Object reference not set to an instance of an object".

I will try again to copy over the 4.0.3 files on Monday and report if I have the same issue.
