"Scott Gutthrie blogged that Microsoft doesn't have a preference on MVC over WebForms."

Between you and me, I think Microsoft (not publicly) believes MVC is the way to go. Any good asp.net developer would tell you that MVC is better and cleaner. No one says WebForms produces a cleaner and more optimized html and better separation of concerns. Because there's a huge investment in WebForms, ScottGu has to be diplomatic and take no sides and Microsoft has to support the webForms developers by continued support and development. Otherwise there will be an uproar. Scott is a coauthor of an MVC book and he's writing shows MVC excitement. AFAIK, chapter one of the book, a big juicy chapter, was written by him and it's available for free as an eBook pdf.

If Umbraco is switching to MVC, more power to them. But it's a big task to convert a huge asp.net application. You have a team that's doing the conversion, adding the same new features in both projects, the current webforms app and the newer mvc one. A LOT of work.

Despite the objective reasoning laid out in ScottGu's blog on WebForms vs. MVC... it is very clear that MS is putting a lot of energy (read $) behind MVC.  There's lots of reasons for this, none of which add much to the conversation... it's just a fact.  And as Umbraco is converting to MVC, this really is no mystery at all.  It's worth remembering that the Codeplex Foundation went with DotNetNuke.  It's not like this has not happened before, it's just never been so close to home.  Microsoft has been pushing a lot of LAMP technology (trying to sell Windows Server to the LAMP camp) for quite a while.

As for our own features and functions... the pace of DotNetNuke development picked up a lot in 2009 and will increase drastically this year.

yeah.. did Shaun Walker being on Codeplex's board do anything with their decision going with DNN? Just curious.

Of course it did.  Just as other relationships have factored into the current ASP.Net choice.  Just as they factored into ASP.Net's choice to use Community Server originally.  You'll recall that telligent's owner, Rob Howard, worked for ScottGu and somehoe managed to retain the IP for the asp.net forums which originated with WebForums.net, written by Scott Mitchell of 4GuysFromRolla.  Nobody really knows how that all went down, but it's not really relevant.

None of these decisions happen in a vacuum.  And it's totally fine to beat our drums about what we think is good / bad, hot / not... but we need to remember to beat them on both sides.  Because in the end, as Scott so elequently put it...

"The interesting question to debate is not whether abstractions are good or not – but rather which abstractions feels most natural to you, and which map best to the requirements/scenarios/developers of your project."
