Seems like DB scanning is out as a solution because of the LinkClick / fileid option. Seems also there isn't a good solution we could create for the community since the proposed solution requires a copy of the installation, IIS7 SEO toolkit, and may not detect content that is stored by user.

I was not aware of database entries referencing the file by ID since according to the DNN 4.8 ERD (DNN480ERD.pdf) that I found in this site, https://www.netdatadesign.net/Documents.aspx,  there is no use of fileID as a foreign key reference.  Thank you so much for your insight and for being such a supporting community.

You could use something like Sysinternal's free Process Monitor http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sy... (formally FileMon) in conjuntion with a spider to create a log of what files are being accessed. I would of course do this on a development server and spend a lot of time just clicking through and exploring the site (especially the admin side). Once you have a list of files that weren't accessed you could remove them... keeping a backup of all the files just in case.

As far as i understood, you can first remove all the files without reference from the server and keep a backup with you and then use xenu to find and fix the broken links accordingly.

thanks,

jain, that is probably not a good suggestion, because any external tool only looks at pages that are accessible for unauthenticated users. Documents might also be used on pages that are accessible for authenticated users only.
