I got the message

The control collection cannot be modified during DataBind, Init, Load, PreRender or Unload

When trying to upgrade from 04.09.04 to 05.01.00.  Further on the stack trace goes on to mention DotNetNuke.UI.Utilities.MSAJAX.Register(Page objPage).

After wasting a full day on this I discovered that the cause for me was that AJAX was turned OFF in host settings before the upgrade.  I'm sure I had a great reason for turning it off, but it seems to break this upgrade process. (Find it in Host Settings - Other settings.)  I turned it on, retried the upgrade and the problem went away.

It may be relevant that after the upgrade that exact setting has dissapeared.  I'd guess it's rolled into the JQuery settings in some way.

Best wishes,
