Hello!

I am looking for a way to make SQL data available to FLASH controls I want to build. Over time, I want to be able to replace the flash controls by new ones, but providing the data remains the same. Does anyone have any experience in that area?

I have experience in flash controls that read XML. So I have been thinking of setting up a DNN module that executes SQL statemedata and makes resulting data available as some form of XML, eg as an RSS feed.

The standard DDN module 'Reports' has almost what I need. In the settings one can enter a SQL statement. When pressing the 'Show Xml Source' button, XML data is shown. Exactly what I need!!

So eg. this query "select PortalID From prd_Portals" gives us:

<DocumentElement>
  <QueryResults>
    <PortalID>0</PortalID>
  </QueryResults>
  <QueryResults>
    <PortalID>2</PortalID>
  </QueryResults>
  <QueryResults>
    <PortalID>3</PortalID>
  </QueryResults>
  <QueryResults>
    <PortalID>6</PortalID>
  </QueryResults>
</DocumentElement>

And this is really all I need!

My questions are:

  • Is a module that can do this already available? Maybe a reporting module from showcovered?
  • Would it otherwise be hard to modify the DNN reporting module to disclose the XML data?

All help is appreciated!

Hi Edgar, I am not really sure I know of a module that already does this. We are researching the possibility of building a module that will generate an RSS Feed from a SQL query though... Could be possibly changed to generate an XML file from SQL. -Chad

We are on DNN 7+ and I found a great free extension by Roger Selwyn called RTP RSS Feed. Had it up and running in under an hour.

I found this nice (and free) extension yesterday that lets me write a custom SQL script and return an RSS feed.
Had it up and running in under an hour.
