I have installed dotnetnuke on XP systems many times without any issues I couldn't resolve fairly easily.  I now have to Win7 Pro boxes I cannot get the install wizard to run on at all.  I get continuous errors such as the one I will list momentarily.  I have tried on 2 different boxes.  One has VS2008 on it, the other doesn't.  I have DNN Community 05.02.03.  I want plain vanilla with SQLServer Express 2008 (installed).

It's my understanding .NET 3.5 SP1 is included with Win7 and/or VS2008.  Is there a list of required settings such as IIS 7.5 settings, policy settings or whatever else?   Is there a list of steps/checks proven to work with Win7 installation?  Any help would be appreciated.  I have been struggling with this the better part of 2 days.

Latest error:

Server Error in '/dotnetnuke' Application.

Security Exception

Description: The application attempted to perform an operation not allowed by the security policy.  To grant this application the required permission please contact your system administrator or change the application's trust level in the configuration file.

I had the same problems... for about two weeks, until I discovered this:

I suspect you're using the wrong user (many users select the network user, but under windows 7 it's different - see http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/B... ). Please note the documentation/readme.txt also contains useful information

It's really weird how one (me) can struggle with something for 2 days.  Then finally decide to ask for help by posting on a forum.  Then, within minutes solve the problem myself!  Maybe I should just post gibberish and cross my fingers.  Nonetheless, thanks for the help and your link.  I will definitely read it and learn all I can.

I solved the problem shortly after I posted, but due to moderator rules my post wasn't up to post back to.

You are right in that it apparently was user issues.  I had seen the blog you gave me the link to previously and had already tried that.  I still don't know why it didn't solve my problem then.  Perhaps I did something wrong or didn't enter the right identity for that app pool.  What I ultimately did was create a new app pool for just dotnetnuke and entered the NetworkService account for the identity.  I already had NetworkService, IIS_IUSRS and DefaultAppPool as accounts for my dotnetnuke folder.  One of them should have worked previously it seemed and NetworkService did finally work with the new app pool.

Something I noticed regarding using the new app pool identity for IIS 7.5 is that my DefaultAppPool lists ApplicationPoolIdentity as the identity.  However, when I checked names for existing accounts there is a DefaultAppPool account, but not a ApplicationPoolIdentitiy account.  Are those two the same? And if so, I don't know why my installation didn't work earlier.  It's pretty confusing as to what account names correspond to what identity names.  Even Network Service and NetworkService is goofy.  Which is it?  With a space or without?   Where does one see what alias points to what?  I have to do some experimenting with the various app pools and accounts and figure out what is what.

Thanks for the help.
