It would be nice to be able to use the unordered list with the html object method of setup, too. That is the method that is stated as preferred to be more upgrade friendly, so that is the method I use, but then the unordered list is out of the question unless you make a second step of editing the ascx and run the risk of losing it if the skin is parsed again. Seems contradictory to the recommendations for best practice. Another reason to not use it for now. I'll keep checking to see if both issues are addressed in the future as that would be the way to go with the unordered list option.

I agree anything "standard" should also work in HTML skins.
But to be honest I think HTML skins are useful for skinners without knowledge of asp.net, but there is not much against ascx skins IMO.
I have created ascx skins from my start with DNN and did not experience any upgrade issues with the skin until now.

Timo, I've done both ascx and html skins, but when 5.0 first came out something was published somewhere (I forget where now) that stated the html object method was the preferred method to keep things upgrade friendly, so naturally I followed that official recommendation. Is that not actually the recommendation now? I know it stated both methods would be supported, but the html was preferred. The ascx method would certainly simplify things when designing a skin because you would bypass the whole need to parse the skin to generate the ascx. Well, now I'm so used to the html object method and I have a basic framework setup that I probably wouldn't switch to ascx anyway. Still, look forward to working with the menu as an unordered list someday. Definite improvement.

I think the oposit html skins is useful for those who really understand the asp.net and DNN!
One of the benefit of html skins was (unfortunatly not any more as it is not maintained) that hose skiins could just be reloaded to work if the underlying code was changed. This have happened a few times during the time of DNN.

Those skinners that only used ascx method had to redo there skin packages those who used the html method had no need for that.
