No, you should restore all files and database, manual tweaking is not a suggested way - you would need to undo all the ugprade scripts. Another option might be waiting for 5.3.1 and hoping that it will fix your issues.

Good job, 5.3.1 fixed the major email issue.

I am still receiving an extra garbage email in notification. Before I was receiving 2 or 3 extra email, now, only 1.

The mass mailing is fixed.

We have a couple of known issues left to fix for Newsletters/Messaging/System notifications.

You will see an improvement for notifications in the next couple of releases both in the granularity and quality of control and also the results reporting.
