I have a legacy document management system online and I'm wanting to upgrade to dnn repository. I want to upload the user folders and configure categories table and object tables manually  or by using access queries to link up the objects in the folders to the repository module. I don't have the time or expertise to build a web application to do this. I'm having trouble understanding how the module finds the folders where the objects are located. How are the repository objects associated with the folders and files? Can you give me a hint?

After looking at it again, it's not so hard. There are only two tables to be concerned with, and the application has the folder locations hard wired depending on the way repository is set up. I was confused because I saw files and folders tables in the dnn database and thought there had to be some connection, but there is not. I uploaded a file and manually configured the database tables and it showed up in repository, so what I'm planning to do is get my directories into a text file by using a dos dir command, import them into a table, link sql server tables into an access database front end using odbc, build my queries in access, upload the files into the appropriate portal repository directories, and configure the object and object categories tables using access queries. (I use access queries to manipulate data because they are a lot easier for me to build than tSQL statements, it's a personal preference.)

I'm replying to myself because I figured it out, it's simple. Repository hardwires where the files go. The files and folders tables in dnn threw me. Manually  manipulating the data through access or sql server management studio is possible if you don't want to spend time developing a web utility.

"Repository hardwires where the files go"

That is not true, if you log into your portal using the HOST account, then on the module settings, you will see some additional "Host Only" options, such as the ability to specifiy the location of the files.

Yep, I noticed when I started really looking at the structure of the data tables. I've been developing a front end in Access to handle manipulating the data in the tables outside of the application. This is useful for ftping a bunch of files up and then associating them with the database and assigning them categories. I need this tool because I'm converting from another legacy document management system.  A lot of stuff I said in the posts are probably subject to revision. DNN and programming in general are very complicated for me (I'm not a programmer) so I'm figuring a lot of things out as I go. Maybe I'll gain enough proficiency and spare time to contribute something useful to this project someday. I do appreciate the time you put in to answering people's questions.
