I'm guessing one of the reasons DNN Corp. is choosing to make this module PE only and not make it available on Snowcovered for CE is so they are not in direct competition with third party developers on snowcovered for CE sales.  However, in this particular case, since the module was already available DNN wouldn't really be in competition - an existing module just has a new owner.

Some have guessed that the DNN thinking for this was to force CE users to purchase the $2000 PE version. I kind of doubt this was the thinking - at least I hope it wasn't - seeing as how the majority of CE users are smart enough to realize there are other solutions on the market.  IF the thinking was solely to be able to provide a better solution to their enterprise class PE customers then it will probably be a good move.

As far as the overall results of this move I tend to agree somewhat with Nina. Ultimately (and I hope I'm wrong) I think this move is another nail in the CE coffin. Not the first and not the last but another nail just the same.

I'm guessing that the next companies/products  DNN Corp will take off the market will be:

- DataSprings

- R2i's Open Web Studio products...

If they can afford them. I'm sure the VC's will pony up more rounds to get them the cash.

The VC's will attempt to monetize what the Community, the creative commons, has built up the last few years by effectively cashing us in and then selling us out, or vice versa.

Leaving the module on SC effectively turns DNN Corp into a competitor of another module vendor (me to be precise). There's nothing preventing them from doing this, but the repurcussions would be significant potentially killing the CE market (who's next?). And it doesn't make sense. DNN is targeting a new market with PE. The pricing makes PE and CE markets diverge. @Greg: it's not just "a new owner" as DNN Corp is hardly comparable to any existing module vendors. Peter

The modules are back on snowcovered with info

"They may no longer be available for purchase after they are integrated. Support from Xepient will be available for existing customers if the modules are no longer available on Snowcovered."

Competition in the marketplace is a good thing.  If DNN corp [or any other 2000 pound gorilla] wants to put a lot of effort into making a low cost high quality module - all the power to them.  Everyone benifits except for the Vendor of an inferior module.  This is nothing new.

Withdrawing low cost high quality modules from the marketplace is a bad thing.  If DNN Corp wanted to improve PE, then they could strike a deal to include the Xepient products (like they did with Telerik) in PE.  With OEM pricing this would make the PE version more and more attractive and cost effective as more and more features are bundled into it.   The only reason to withdraw product from the CE marketplace is to undermine CE and force more sales of PE.
