Hi all!

I'm fairly new to the DNN community. I have written a website some time ago, but now have a higher version (5) and have forgotten most of it over time. I only just claimed a website today. The first thing I want to do is the customize things like the background and skin/container. But I cannot seem to find free skins anywhere. Does anyone have a website where I can find the most basic things without having to pay?

Secondly, standard, the new website shows the DotNetNuke logo and some content. I can delete the content, but seem to be unable to delete the DNN logo on the top. Is it part of the skin?

Any help is great! Thanks in advance!

Ivo

to specify the logo, go to site settings and in section "appearance" upload and select your own image file. free skins are available at skins.dotnetnuke.com as well as www.dnnskins.com and other places, google/bing is your friend ;)

Thank you for your great and quick answer. I managed to change the DNN logo into a picture and have also found a beauty of a skin for my site. But now a new problem arises: I get an error saying the following:

Error reading the zip package - see below

StartJob Reading Installation Manifest file
Info Reading Package Manifest - Skin - DotNetNuke.Blocks.Skin
Failure Install aborted - The module being installed is not compatible with your host application version ( an upgrade is required )
Info Reading Package Manifest - Container - DotNetNuke.Blocks.Container
Failure Install aborted - The module being installed is not compatible with your host application version ( an upgrade is required )

I believe it's because I need to upgrade, so I checked and version 5.3 is out. I'm running 5.1. So I downloaded the package, but can't install it. It's not a skin, nor a container. Then, where can I get the site to upload that info? Is there an install within the ZIP file?

I know, it's very basic, but I surely hope someone can help me. A little handholding in the beginning, but I'll soon get there. Promised.

Thanks again!

Here are some basic upload instructions I put together.

Hi Chris,

Thank you for the answer. I've read the instructions to upgrade and am stuck at numer 5;

"5. Copy the contents of the extracted UPGRADE package over the existing site files."

That's 34 items, not counting the ones in subfolders. Will DNN let me copy the entire folder at once? Or should I go one by one?

Furthermore, I read another post with instructions, which gave me the feeling it was a lot harder than it now seems. I quote:

Key points to note from the video

  • Backup your installation
  • Backup the web.config file
  • Backup any other files you may have changed such as the fav.ico file, custom 404 pages, etc.
  • Edit the web.config file
    <add key="AutoUpgrade" value="true" />
    to
    <add key="AutoUpgrade" value="false" />
  • Upload this change to the server
  • Transfer from your server web.config file the settings to the release.config file, covering:
    • <add key="SiteSqlServer" value="Server=7.8.2.1,23;Database=audio32xT;uid=Myuid;pwd=usm38fTJ;" />
    • <add key="MachineValidationKey" value="DB02CB97BAE1814E49F1310895EC33B22FC70014" />
    • <add key="MachineDecryptionKey" value="6E324A6FF2B87D590B71D61FDD95C82A137C980893117CF0"/>
    • <add key="InstallationDate" value="11/19/2005" />
  • If you have made any further changes to your web.config file for third party modules,  HTTP compression, or database object qualifiers, copy these changes across to the release.config file
  • If you have enabled HTTP compression, disable it until you have completed the upgrade
  • Tip: - When you make changes to your web.config file, surround the changes with comments so that it easy to spot at a later date any changes that you have made
  • Save the changes to the release.config file and rename it to web.config
  • The first file to upload is the dotnetnuke.dll file from the bin folder
  • This informs DotNetNuke that you are upgrading the website and it will now display an under construction page
    • (You can view the under construction page in the Install folder)
  • Upload all of the DotNetNuke 3.2 installation files over the top of the current installation
  • Open your browser and enter the following URL:
    • http://www.yourwebsiteaddress.com/Install/Install.aspx?mode=Install
  • This will trigger the installation process
  • Check that your website is operating correctly and that you can still login

End of quote. Found on: http://www.dnncreative.com/Tutorials/DNNTutorialsforBeginners/HowtoupgradeDotNetNuke/tabid/202/Default.aspx

See why I'm confused? Perhaps I should leave it as is. Although the big advantage here is that I have no data to lose. I've only just begun building, so I can take the risk.

What do you say? Has upgrading become easier since the abovementioned post was done? I believe that was from 3.x to 3.2.

Thanks in advance!

Ivo
