Did you get any errors when you did the upgrade? Check the log files. Also, in the future, please be sure that you have a backup before you try to upgrade, it can be very helpful.

No, the updating has correctly been completed without signalling errors! I can't find the log file: where do I find it?

Thank you, Ave.

There is apparently a mismatch between the version of the dotnetnuke.dll assembly, the version of the dotnetnuke.sqldataprovider.dll assembly and the version of the database.

If this is a local install, you can check the version of the two assemblies by opening Windows file explorer to that folder and hovering over each of the dll files. The dotnetnuke.dll assembly should be version 5.3.1.x and dotnetnuke.sqldataprovider.dll should be 5.2.0.0. If it is a remote hosted install, you would need to first download the two assemblies locally to check their version.

If you have access to the database, look at the last row in the Versions table. This will tell you the version of the database but will not give a complete assurance that all SQL upgrades properly occured.

To check for errors that might have been logged during the upgrade of the database, look into the site's providers/dataproviders/SqlDataProvider folder. You will see a number of files name xx.xx.xx.log where xx.xx.xx is the version number of the upgrade script. Any errors which occured during the running of each version's upgrade script will be found in the corresponding log file.

Finally, I assume that you are not able to access your site and log in as admin or host user to look for errors in Admin-->Event Viewer. Again, if you have access to the database, those errors will be logged to the EventLog table. They are hard to read there, however, because the important error information is contained in xml format in the LogProperties column and needs to be parsed into more readable form.
