 Hi Richard

I am not really qualified to comment on your points.

I can say that in the last 4 years I have never experienced any data loss although of course that means little in terms of probability.  The only downtime I am aware of took place two years ago after the data centres network services had an MS patch go horribly wrong.

To tell the truth I had never even considered data centre disk failure before you brought it up.

My backup routine is to use the domain backup system once a week to place a pw protected zip of the wwwroot and the db. Obviously I also do a backup before anything significant.

I believe that transaction logs are used on the dedicated servers.

Sorry not to be able to be more helpful.

 Ian

Hi Ian,

I've just been having a discussion with RedFoxHosting.

From what I've heard so far, I'm not happy about how they back up the SQL Server database.  AIUI they take a nightly file image of the disk, but do not use a SQL Server aware backup program.  I'm concerned that this may mean that any restored database could be unusable.  It's certainly not a SQL Server supported scenario.

In addition they don't use the transaction logs and they don't separate the TL from the main database.  That means a disk failure has a near 100% chance of destroying both DB and TL in one go.  If the restored DB is no use then you are kinda stuffed.

UPDATE - it seems that the nightly backup gets the '.bak files from SQL Server' so I'm now happy that the restored file should be recoverable as a valid database.  Recovering to a point in time is not a 'supported scenario'.  I cannot say if there might be enough parts 'lying around' to make it possible.

I've had great support in getting these questions answered.  I'm likely to give them a try.

Best wishes,
- Richard
