Can anyone advise what protocol is needs to let a user download a file using a link in text?  By that I mean I want the user to be able to directly download the file and save it rather than have it open in a new window.

Suggestions welcome.

Many thanks

Keith.

how are you linking to the file?  The actual open location for a file, regardless of the type is controlled a lot by the users browser.  FOr example PDF's can open in the browser or download depending on their client side settings.

You can at times force the download, but to accomplish this you have to make coding changes to the way that the file is sent, and a simple HTML link will not get you that support.
