Chris,

I have tried performing an upgrade using the 5.4.0 upgrade package (I succesfully created a brand new installation of anotehr instance with this version -full install zip)...

I downloaded the 5.4.0 upgrade package... and placed it in the instance directory I want to upgrade (5.2.3)... extract it right there. Overwriting or mergeing all files.. This particalur instace I have setup as a dummy - so no worries if things go bad...

I have tried both the upgrade package and the install package with no luck. This time I did not need to duplicate the site... Everytime I try to perform this upgrade I get the following error:

Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine.

Details: To enable the details of this specific error message to be viewable on remote machines, please create a <customErrors> tag within a "web.config" configuration file located in the root directory of the current web application. This <customErrors> tag should then have its "mode" attribute set to "Off".

<!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->

<configuration>
    <system.web>
        <customErrors mode="Off"/>
    </system.web>
</configuration>

Notes: The current error page you are seeing can be replaced by a custom error page by modifying the "defaultRedirect" attribute of the application's <customErrors> configuration tag to point to a custom error page URL.

<!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->

<configuration>
    <system.web>
        <customErrors mode="RemoteOnly" defaultRedirect="mycustompage.htm"/>
    </system.web>
</configuration>

That is the generic asp.net error message.  You will have to do as the instructions say and change the value for the error handling in the web.config file.  That will show the actual error.  You need the specific error message to diagnose the problem.

Here is the error I get after editing the web config file... any thoughts?

Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Exception Details: System.IO.FileLoadException: Could not load file or assembly 'Telerik.Web.UI' or one of its dependencies. The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131040)

Source Error:

An unhandled exception was generated during the execution of the current web request. Information regarding the origin and location of the exception can be identified using the exception stack trace below.

Assembly Load Trace: The following information can be helpful to determine why the assembly 'Telerik.Web.UI' could not be loaded.

WRN: Assembly binding logging is turned OFF.
To enable assembly bind failure logging, set the registry value [HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Fusion!EnableLog] (DWORD) to 1.
Note: There is some performance penalty associated with assembly bind failure logging.
To turn this feature off, remove the registry value [HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Fusion!EnableLog].

Also this time - I used the full install package (to make sure all the modules were up to date) -  I did not overwrite the web.config file and the App_Data folder as instructed...

Not sure why this error is coming up.
