We have a custom based DNN solution which consist of 580 portals which all have the same structure and modules.

Each portal has approximately 50 pages and the site has 59 custom modules (which are on all portals).

Once you reach a portal the performance is ok, but trying to connect for the first time (and changing to another portal) fails 9 out of 10 times.

I guess it has to do with caching but when I look at my server performance then there is not much CPU activity. It looks like the site is just waiting.

The problems started after migrating to DNN 5.3.1 (from DNN 4.9.5).  We are using for this site the community edition of DNN.

Can someone point me into the right direction?

how did you configure caching and compression in Host settings? are there scheduler jobs running frequently?

  • Page State Persistence - Page
  • Module Cache Provider - Memory
  • Cache Setting - Light
  • Authenticated Cacheability - ServerAndNoCache
  • Compression Setting - No Compression
  • Use Whitespace Filter - On

We've tried different settings but there seemed to be not much difference. We use the OpenDocumentLibrary, so there are some issues with the compression settings.

The most frequent scheduled task is set to 5 minutes and takes less then a second. All other task are every couple of hours or once a day. There were task that had an higher frequency but we've disabled them.

In addition to my last posting, I've set the caching to "Heavy" this results in a good performance when I've eventualy reached a portal but still switching to a different portal or going directly to a "new" portal results (very often) in a time-out.

there might be an issue with sql server performance, if you encounter a timeout during site startup after the app pool has been recycled.
