I mange the City and County of Denver's website and I'm perplexed about why DNN's verion of the Rad Telerik Editor has removed core features such as configuration of themes for different roles. If there was reasoning behind this, will you please share with the rest of the community?

In managing a website it's hard to enforce standards when we provide non-technical editors the abilty to apply Comic Sans font, 25px in bright pink throughtout the site. When we extend all toolbar options to our staff, this is what happens and it doesn't appear that your default edtior can handle different options by role.

I'm also disappointed by the lack of support and documentation for this default editor. We pay for the DNN 5.4.1 Professional license and were assured that  we would get full support and documentation for DNN. Any advice about how we can accomplish the stated goal above would be truly appreciated.

Chris: play with the ContentFilters settings.  The different levels are in the ConfigDocumented.xml file.

Chani:

  • Re templates: enable by adding "htmtemplate" to the host settings for allowed file types (as per my first post).  However, you may have better results using the snippets as only the admin can set their content.  See my other post about smilies:
  • Re fonts etc.: also follow the steps I outlined to remove the buttons for both config files.  I think it is better users have these by default since many site owners are non-technical and want font control out-of-the-box.  They are the lowest common denominator but important to the general adoption of DNN.
  • Re roles: I don't have a need for this so I defer to The Corp and Telerik.
  • Re documentation: I partially agree which is why I started this thread in the first place. Telerik passing this off looks bad IMHO and I find both companies equally negligent in not coordinating the release more actively with the community.  That said, this is a better editor, once tamed, so worth some patients while the integration bugs are worked out.

Chris, thanks so much for your thoughtful and quick response. We may be able to follow the configuration steps you provided below and strike a balance between the roles we've created for site administration.

If not, we'll just use FCK for now. I appreciate your candor about coordination between parties. One more question, in your post about using "htmltemplate" it stated that we would have to be on 5.4.2. We're on 5.4.1 Pro edition. Will this method still work?

lance, thanks, that was just the help I needed. Now one more question: Is there a way to set the width/height of the editor when it loads on the screen like I could configure in the Fck editor?

Ventrian modules can control height and width but the HTML module doesn't override the defaults.  The setting I tested in the configuration file didn’t make a difference.

One of the biggest missing elements from the FCK editor is portal and instance settings.  These would allow administrators to control things like height and width plus a whole library of features.

When I get a chance I will log this as an enhancement in the support site.  The whole configuration file could be an admin/host page.
