Now that Google is penalising sites with poor performance in their rankings.
http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspo...

One of my websites has already tagged it as poor performance and this is with doing all the tips from this forum mitch sellers etc.. and running the latest version. I am not running any additional 3rd party modules. DNN really will need to focus heavily on a "performance release" as this would complete a fab product.

Doc. That's just my point... Having kept abreast with this new policy (Google's not the only one that's going to adopt this strategy), someone needs to do something about this pretty quickly. Other CMS platforms are already up-to-date, if not way ahead WRT performance, and though DNN is a hot product as a whole, there's a clear performance gap and a "Lite" version gap.

It's just a pity that the core stakeholders and corp guys don't seem to see the imperative. I know the Experience guys are pushing for better compliance, leaner CSS and JS, etc. But I'd imagine that their efforts are always going to come down to a board-level decision, or a decision based on retaining outmoded, legacy rubbish in an effort to retain their old user base...

It would be good if we got a decent response. There's often the odd, "it's coming, it's coming," but never anything concrete.

I have had several complaints from our clients that DNN is just too sluggish and bloated for their needs. Is there a possible DNN Lite in the works, or is this something you need someone to work on. I would surely give my time towards such a project.

What I would think would be best is that during the install you can "Opt-Out" of some of the unnecessary core features and put switches in the code to skip the core processes not needed, and also the option later to turn these features on at a later time if needed. What are your thoughts?

I have found stripping out most of the modules works alot. But it would be good to document which other skin objets etc.. can be removed safely.

I have a new project that would benefit greatly from a "DNN Lite".  I could almost go with Paul's V 2.1.2 idea as the project isn't going to be that public but it will be on the net so probably not.

I'm wondering how far community members could take a newer version like 5.5.1  just by stripping out modules, skin objects, etc.

Or might another option be starting with 2.1.2 and adding the necessary security updates???

Maybe a starting point would be a discussion here on which items can be safely removed??
