Hi

I need some advice on how to restore DB's.  I do not have file access on the DB box.

My host supplies My Little SQL Tools as part of one of my accounts but this facility is not available on my semi-dedicated account.
I have no problem getting a backup its restoring that's the problem.

I have 8 sites on this account and do not want to buy a module for each - also the DBs are on a different box which seems to rule out most third party db backup/restore modules (AFAIK).

What do other people do/use. I don't' mind spending some money but obviously . .

Does anyone have any input on Microsoft SQL Server Database Publishing Wizard 1.1
It looks like it may be good solution but thought it worth while to ask here first.

 Thanks

 Ian

BTW: In over 4 years working with DNN I have never needed to roll back an installation but a few sites are proving problematic getting to 5.4.1

Microsoft SQL Server Database Publishing Wizard 1.1 creates an insert statement for every row in your database. To use them for restore purposes you probably have to do some editing. First do it in a test database first which has the same exact structure of  your prod database. Truncate all the tables. Allow identity inserts on the tables, run the inserts and disable identity inserts. If there foreign key restraints, I am sure they are, the inserts have to be done in the proper order. I doubt the wizard creates them in the proper order. The Export wizard doesn't do it.

Depending on the size of the database, the amount of the inserts could be huge but if your host allows SSMS access, you should be OK. There's another tool which allows running SQL from the command line taking input from text files. The host still needs to allow access to sql server from the net.

Hi Tony

Thanks very much for the info.  Looks like it is not ideal and maybe not workable at all.

I guess I will have to look around SC but ideally I want a windows program not a module.

Regards

Ian

You can restore DBs on your local machine and then use Publishing Wizard to generate SQL Script that you can execute in your hosting account. Don't forget to check database user after that.
