I exported a page from my localhost and included the content. I copied the template to the production server but when I try to create a new page from the template the skin is set to the default skin, not the one set in the template, all the rest of the content is correct. I looked at the xml in the template file and the correct skin name and path is in there. The skin is installed on the production server. I have to manually reset the skin on the new page to the  correct skin at which point the content is in the correct locations.. Am I missing a setting somewhere or should the new page not start out with the stored skin info?

Is that skin installed on the production server?

Yes, as i indicated in my post. The skin is there and i have to manually edit the page and set it to the skin name that is saved in the template file. The skin is in the same folder name on production as my local server.

<skinsrc>[G]Skins/Wesley/home.ascx</skinsrc>

The interesting thing is it seems to find the containers, just not the skins.
