I am new to DNN.  I am trying to install for the first time.  I have followed the install instructions as good as I can, but I can't get it to work.  Here's what I've got:

Windows XP (SP2)

Visual Studio 2005 (ASP 2.)

SQL Express 2005

DNN 4.x

All went ok up to going to the site created with IE.  I load http://localhost/dotnetnuke.  The program starts to load, then I get an error.

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Exception Details: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Source Error:

Line 84:
Line 85:             'Determine the Upgrade status and redirect to Install.aspx
Line 86:             Select Case GetUpgradeStatus()
Line 87:             Case Globals.UpgradeStatus.Install, Globals.UpgradeStatus.Upgrade
Line 88:              If AutoUpgrade Then

If I read this correctly, the program is trying to do an upgrade.  I am doing a new install.  Any help would be appreciated.

This check is done on install, too. "Install" is a valid upgrade status. I've seen other posts on this error. I suggest you post a message here and share your experience and troubleshooting. Hopefully, you guys can help each other. It's hard for those of us who don't have this problem to help if we can't reproduce it.
