I have a parent portal and a child portal.  I need one person to be able to log in to both.  I know they don't share user accounts, so I just tried to create the same user in both.  I created the user in the Parent Portal first.  Then when I went to create it in the child portal, it said invalid username.  I added an 's' to the end and it accepted it.  Can a parent portal and a child portal not have usernames that are the same?  I have several people that are going to need to be able to log in to both portals.  Do I have to tell them they have to have separate logins for the two portals?  Is there a way to make them the same?  Security Roles will be different (may be an admin on the child portal but just a registered user on the parent portal).  Using DNN 4.0.2 on Windows 2003 server.

I've been working with the http://www.inventua.com module that allows you have a link to another portal and they are automatically signed in.  Have a look at that - I believe it could help you solve your problem.

Am I to understand that each child portal would normally have to have it's own set of registered users? Is there not an 'inherit' or 'use unique permissions' capability (dare I say.. sharepoint)? I have a church that needs a main portal and then separately managed child portals for each of the individual ministries; children, adults, education, etc. If a single admin needs to manage two child portals, they'll need a separate login for each??? More importantly, I need registered users to the main portal to have inherited permissions to the child portals...  am I missing something?

Could someone clarify this for me? I haven't been able to find a way to tell a child portal to use the parent portal's credentials...

Thanks.

yes, each portal has its own set of users.

OK, thanks for the reply. I can see advantages of both actually, but the Inventua passthrough seems to be the right answer.

I know this is not the right forum for this necessarily (I have posted a similar thread on their forums) but hopefully, someone with experience can answer this for me.

I have a main portal with the source on a dedicated page.  I have the target on a child portal on a dedicated login page with the login module. I have the keys configured properly on the target with the following string: (edited for security)

Server=192.168.1.99;Database=dnn_databasename;uid=dnn_databaseuser;pwd=password;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"

After logging in at the parent portal and clicking on the link to the child, I land on the child portal login page with the following URL string:

http://www.domainname.com/portal/child/Login/tabid/116/Default.aspx?passthru=n2RmojYS3TtbCWJ4SIqB5jNHpqBnwiNG

But are then logged out of both the parent and the child.  What am I missing here? I don't see any errors but the passthrough is not working properly. The passthrough is sending the proper string but the target is not processing the request to the database. The user does NOT get added to the database but I am not getting any errors.
