Hi;
I am very confused on the way event reminders and/or notifications work. I can request a 'notification' from the edit display of the event and specifiy when this is to occur. I cannot find anything to allow me to specify when a reminder is to be send. Are the two words used interchangeably? Is the little 'notify' checkbox (for event creation according to the help) not the notification one receives for an event?

When i look at the DB, i see that the notification i request thru the edit display is entered into the EventsNotification table.  I also see that the Events table has the 'Reminder' and 'Notify' fields which seems to indicate that the two are different. (Note that the Reminder field states 'You requested nofification....'!)  Yet the templates have one called the 'Reminder -body'. Which text is being used?   (It looks like the template is copied into the Reminder field when the event is created. Is that true?)

I am trying to make use of reminders (when someone has enrolled for an event). Some clarification would really be helpful.

Regards
Hans

Hi Hans,

In theory we should only use the word Reminder, but I note we are not consistent. There is some history behind this... In a default 5.0.3 install:-
  • Settings has 'Reminder Settings' - 'Allow Event Reminders', etc
  • These use Reminder Email templates - though I note these use the words 'Event Notification' in the template, which I will correct
  • Detail View uses 'Notify Me for the Event @' - again this needs correcting.
  • Edit View has a 'Send Reminder' tick box with Time/Body/Subject options

You should not find a record entered into the Notifications table when you edit an event. Records should only be added when a user requests a Reminder from the Event Details view.

Notify/ and Reminder in the Events table are historical (i.e. before the current project team). One is the subject line, one is the body. These are populated initially from the two templates, but can be customised on the edit view per Event.

You will need the Events schedule item running for 'Reminders' to be sent. It may appear as a item with a blank name in the portal schedule if you are using some versions of DNN' Otherwise I think it has 'Notifications' in the title :-) If it is running, you should be able to check the time/date at which the reminder will be sent by looking at the date/time recorded in the Notifications record.

I'm not sure what you mean by reminders when someone has enrolled...

Cheers
Roger

Thanks Roger. This clarifies a lot. I note that the Events table Reminder field seems to be populated when the event is created. If the Reminders template is subsequently updated, it seems that this is not propagated to the Events table entries. Should not the message always emanate from the template and is not the reminder field obsolete?

As to the enrollment notifications, i was merely noting that we want reminders sent when people have enrolled for an event.  This is not an option that i expect the module would support as such, but i do it through a SQL procedure invokded periodically. It seems to work but i need to test a little more.

Regards
Hans

Hi Hans,

The intention is for the template to be the default value of the reminder set on the event. This allows people to have different reminders per event (again this is historical - we don't like removing features that already exist).

Cheers
Roger

Agree that it is nice to permit different reminders to be set for different events. However, in that case I believe that the template should be copied into the Reminder field of the event when an Update is done, not only when the event is created. Some potential issues with that also, but better than never allowing it to be updated once created.
Thanks.
Hans
