Hi,

I want to upgrade various installations from dnn5.2 to 5.4. Some of them are on shared hosting servers and have generally run well at v5.2. However, although the installation upgraded successfully, the app fails during compilation with OutOfMemory exceptions.

I have two questions that I have not been able to find answers to:

1) Is DNN intended to run on shared hosting?
2) What is the minimum server spec required for a 5.4 installation?

Any information on this gratefully received.

Tried a clean install of 5.4.2 on shared hosting, and got an OutOfMemory exception while the install wizard was installing the minimum feature set. I guess that means that DNN doesn't run on shared hosting. A pity, as the higher cost of ownership will mean DNN doesn't compete well in an important part of the market for CMS solutions.

Anyone got any thoughts on this?

This seems to me an important question to establish some hard facts on :)

So, let me put the question another way. This morning I installed DNN542 and a good handful of modules on a dedicated server with 512MB memory, and it installs and runs correctly. Has anyone run it on less? Otherwise I conclude that DNN does not run without a guaranteed half-gig of memory, which may rule out a lot of shared hosting possibilities.

dotnetnuke runs quite succesfully on hosting servers -there are many hundreds of thousands of sites running on it. It's hard to put a figure on what a site needs as it's dependant on site content, modules installed, number of visitors etc., but many people run on cheap godaddy/webhost4life accounts. Many hosting providers put a celling on 50-100MB of Ram per site (the host multiple sites in an app pool meaning the 30mb .net framework requirement is pooled). Each module you install typically installs files into the bin folder and these are loaded into the app space, consuming capacity - one of the best things you can do is minimise the modules you are running i.e. delete any unused modules.
