Heres an update..

I have reinstalled dnn version 3.3.3 (I didnt need version 4) and have tried the import again. This time step 1 is successful and I can see all of the users in the sql database. Unfortunately all subsequent steps now fail with a critical error. Unfortunately I can't find any way of seeing the details of the error as nothing appears to be logged anywhere. Any help would be appreciated.

there are existing scripts for older versions on 3rd party vendors.  But not on DNN.  You can write your own script.

Well, I got the source from this thread about porting and after a little tweaking, I have a fully working version that imports my phpbb forum (and users) in to DNN 4.6 with the forum module version 3.  Then I upgraded to DNN 4.8.2, all still worked.  When I upgraded the forum module to version 4 (latest one) I did not see anything change.  I added another "forum" module to the same page and it shows and empty "general" forum, and the module below shows all my imported forums still in the forum 3 format.

Does the upgrade of the forum module from 3 to 4 drop all of your forums?  is there a way to import DNN forum 3.0 to DNN forum 4.0?
