More details... the user used his old email as his username and wanted to update his email address. so he changed his email to the new address, but then he realized that he couldn't change his username. he then deleted his account thinking he could create a new one with the correct email address and username. that didn't work (b/c of soft delete) so he emailed me. I changed the deleted account by updating the record with the old email address so he could create a new account with the new email, but it doesn't work. The registration page says the email address already exists. Any ideas?

soft delete feature still needs to be completed, e.g. there is no undelete feature. you may set column "isDeleted" to "0" and restart application to clear the cache. Check, whether there is a record in userportals and userroles (if not, he needs to re-register on your site using same credentials).

I noticed this user in question had a record in aspnet_Roles and aspnet_Membership. Once I went in there and updated everything to be consistent, this seemed to have solved the problem, though I am waiting to hear whether the user received the password that I requested. In the event viewer there were no problems. Thanks. I hope this helps someone else. Are these left tables from an old version of DNN?

aspnet tables (aspnet_membership and aspnet_users) contain data of MS membership component, which is used for passwords and registration. they need to be in sync with DNN users table (linked by username!)
