I considering moving hosts - my current host has broken my DNN alias functionality with a migration to new servers.  I'm sure it's some kind of configuration - but's they can't seem to get it working.

I've looked at WinHost - however, to host multiple domains all web apps have are in root/[subfolder] - and then use a redirect script in the root folder default.aspx page to detect incoming request and redirect based on domain or sub-domain.

That's all fine, but I'm wondering if DNN aliases will still work in that case.  I want to avoid going through registering/paying and setting everything up just to test.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Jay

I would personally recommend sticking with a hosting provider that is known for supporting the DNN specific functionality.

The process you are describing, I am not sure would work very well.

I'm surprised. I have been looking at Winhost as an option and it seemed almost too good to be true. I needed to change host because the Windows 2003 server on which I am hosted does not support Khmer localization. The only limitation that made me choose a different option is that there is a maximum bandwith usage per site.

But I decided for a virtual dedicated server instead, one that lets me grow without limits (if I pay for increased traffic). So I cannot tell you for sure it will work in Winhost, yet I would be very surprised if it doesn't. For what I understand, you send all domains to the root of your site where you installed dnn. Then, you set the aliasses for each site in your dnn settings. DNN will then send domains to the portals they belong to.

$4.95 for a one-month test is not that much, and to all likelihood it will work perfectly.

There was another limitation that put me off and you should know about before signing up with Winhost. That is that the account allows email server access to a SmarterMail server for only one domain. See http://forum.winhost.com/showthread.p... for the questions that I had.

On the bright side is the support for SQL backup. It appears that they have a tool that copies a database to a subfolder of the webroot or restores it to the SQL folder, allowing you to download the whole database to your home computer.

When I first installed DNN, they were at version 4.2.something. I did not upgrade DNN until it came at 5.0.1, which was signaled as a high-priority upgrade resolving security issues. I made a backup of my database and applied the upgrade, which failed. I know now why it failed and what I should have done, but at that moment, I could only restore the old version and tried to rollback the database, only to find out that that was not possible. I then had to rebuild my whole site manually.
