Is there any possibility that the site's application pool might have been changed from ASP.Net 2.0 (3.5) back to ASP.Net 1.1 ? On a shared hosting site I had that happen to me once and surprisingly found that setting customErrors mode="Off" had no effect on allowing the actual errors to be seen.

I'm use Godaddy hosting and according to their control panel the web server has ASP.Net 2.0/3.0/3.5 installed. Their help knowledge base also says to set <compilation debug="true" /> along with customError="off". For me neither worked.

I noticed that you mentioned you has set customError="off". Not sure if that was a typing error in your  forum post but note that web.config is case-sensive. Did you try changing to

<customErrors mode="Off" />

with casing exactly as I have typed it?

Fix your connection string.

I upgraded because I have an "updates available" indicator.  I clicked it, expecting some sort of setup to run, and got dumped at the download screen.  My previous installation was using the microsoft web installer about 1/2 an hour before, so I would assume it it be recent.  In other words, mine was a small increment.

I searched for instructions on upgrading and the latest instructions seemed to be from '07 and included incantations over a pot of boiling newt/toad gizzards.  So I ended up doing a backup and overwriting my webroot with the files from the upgrade zip file (there has to be a better way?)

Anyway, I had the same error, but my site is hosted on a vm, so I could use a  localhost connection.  The actual error refers to a lack of permissions - can't remember which one, but I fixed it by changing the application pool to run as "networkservice" rather than "ApplicationPoolIdentity".

Bottom line, it seems that something in the last upgrade changed the requirements for permissions.

Hope this helps with the problem solving.

Phil

p.s. I updated the files but not the database - does anyone know how to do this?
