I am wondering why with each version we keep losing some of the best features. For non-savvy users, I'd show them drag and drop, bring a module from this pane to the next and they absolutely loved that, but sadly them made a huge mistake and upgraded, and in the process lost this feature. They are not the most advanced folks, they can't remember what pane is where and needless to say the suggestions to go to another CMS was brought up.

Is this something I am missing or a bunch of developers made a change in the backend yet again forgetting the whole point is to support the content managers?

Design mode doesn't exist in DNN5 anymore, it is now known as LAYOUT mode. In Layout Mode you will see the Pane names, as well as the ability to drag and drop modules.
