We are comparing DNN with SiteFinity

We have a few questions concerning domain names.......

We have a number of domain names eg. www.mysite.com & www.thesite.com

1) Can we have both domain names pointing to the same DotNetNuke portal?

2) Do we need to configure the portal Alias's to handle this situation? (see 1 above)

3) Can we configure DNN to display a different landing page for each domain name?

4) Will the google analytics module distiguish between the number of hits from domain name. In other words, are the domain names preserved as the user navigates the site?

5) How do I simulate multiple domain names under localhost?

6) Does DNN allow us to search across multiple portal id's?

7) Does DNN allow single sign on across multiple portal id's?

Any help appreciated.

Regards,

Paul.

Hello,
DotNetNuke has the concept of virtualised portals i.e. multiple different portals (each with their own set of pages, users, look & feel, functionality etc.) can share a single database. To determine what portal to direct to DotNetNuke looks up a list of portal alias's and redirects accordingly. This means that theres a lot of flexibility in this area.

1. yes, you simply create a portal with one name (e.g. mysite.com) and add a portal alias for it (e.g. thesite.com)
2. yes
3. you can do this by having seperate portals for each address - if you only want to change the homepage it would take an additional piece of logic e.g. a simple skin object that updated the skin based on url fragment
4. yes they are - in some cases they will change e.g. if you have an SSL site mapped and have enabled SSL in DotNetNuke - as it needs to be domain specific a redirect will occur.
5. add entries into your hosts file - http://kb.mediatemple.net/questions/6...
6. search is user/role permission specific by default - as users are portal specific (except host) it means searches are portal specific. It's easy enough to create a custom search provider to search across multiple portals , or buy one off snowcovered.
7. yes - there are already a number of options such as active directory, facebook, moodle etc., and it's easy to write custom ones http://www.adefwebserver.com/dotnetnu...

Hi Cathal,
Thanks for the quick response.
FYI: We are comparing DNN with SiteFinity - I've worked with DNN in the past:), but have know previous knowledge of SiteFinity. The company website (www.valpak.co.uk) will be rewritten using either SiteFinity or DNN.

re. Question 7 re. Single signon - Can we create a portal for each domain name and share the user login across all portals. This would allow the user to signin once and still gain access to restricted areas of the other portals - I would be suprised if this was possible, but it's worth asking the question. Also, does your example solution cover this? re. http://www.adefwebserver.com/dotnetnukehelp/SingleSignOn/

Also......

8) Can we write custom modules that plug into DNN's publishing workflow?

9) The HTML Pro module is publish/workflow enabled. Is there any other modules that are also publish/workflow enabled? eg. News/Announcments module?

Once again thanks for your help.

Regards,

Paul.

Ah, I get what you mean. No, the SSO solution I suggest is just a centralised solution to authenticate users - users still need authorization for each portal. If a user browses between portals their auth cookie is expired to ensure that a user in one portal cannot automatically access another (except for the host user). Solutions for something such as what you describe exist e.g. http://www.snowcovered.com/Snowcovere... . We also have an item on our roadmap called "portal groups" which would allow a similar use case - this has not been scheduled for a particular version at present.

8. not really - the workflow is html module specific - for CE it's a simple publish later option, for PE you can configure multi-step workflow.

9. not at present. This would require a core workflow API which is ot something we're working on at present.

Hi Cathal,

Thanks that was really useful:)

FYI: I've been tasked with setting up a DNN demo to our marketing dept.
So far they've seen (and liked) SiteFinity, but there are a number of things SiteFinity does not do eg. Content Expiry Dates; Module Level Security; Publishing at a Module level; Multiple Domain Names on a single site (portal aliases); Mature Third Party Market.

But..... They really like the drag & drop ajax admin interface

So...... My job is convince them that DNN is the right choice, whilst appearing impartial;) (tricky)

basically,  I need to cut out a lot of the admin functions and just show them how a guy from marketing can add pages from pre-configured templates.
The page templates need to hide all the page/module security and provide a starting point for content creation.

Can you point me in the right direction re. Template creation?

Also, the SiteFinity guys have been offering an on site demo, although I suspect they realised we are in the uk. Is there anyone in the uk that could do an on site demo of DNN?

Thanks for your help.

Regards,

Paul.

PS - Our existing site is www.valpak.co.uk
