I tried upgrading 4.9.5 to 5.0.0 and it worked with no errors. I was able to login as host and everything seemed fine (except for Dashboard, which I am hoping was a bug in 5.0.0).

With that success, I then upgraded that to 5.2.1 and got an error: Executing Script: 05.02.01.SqlDataProvider Error! (see 05.02.01.log for more information).

The log said:

System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Invalid object name 'Lists'.
   at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection.OnError(SqlException exception, Boolean breakConnection)
   at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlInternalConnection.OnError(SqlException exception, Boolean breakConnection)
   at System.Data.SqlClient.TdsParser.ThrowExceptionAndWarning(TdsParserStateObject stateObj)
   at System.Data.SqlClient.TdsParser.Run(RunBehavior runBehavior, SqlCommand cmdHandler, SqlDataReader dataStream, BulkCopySimpleResultSet bulkCopyHandler, TdsParserStateObject stateObj)
   at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.RunExecuteNonQueryTds(String methodName, Boolean async)
   at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.InternalExecuteNonQuery(DbAsyncResult result, String methodName, Boolean sendToPipe)
   at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.ExecuteNonQuery()
   at DotNetNuke.Data.SqlDataProvider.ExecuteADOScript(String SQL)
   at DotNetNuke.Data.SqlDataProvider.ExecuteScript(String Script, Boolean UseTransactions)

/* Set DataType List to be a SystemList */
/****************************************/

UPDATE Lists SET SystemList = 'True' WHERE ListName = 'DataType'

I was able to login as host, and everything seemed to work, even lists, except for the Dashboard again:
(DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.ModuleLoadException: The file '/DotNetNuke/Admin/Dashboard/Dashboard.ascx' does not exist.).

So now I am thinking I will try upgrading 5.0.0 to 5.2.0, and then upgrading that to 5.2.1 to see if I can avoid the error. But it seems to work, so far. I am hoping to get all the way to 5.5.0 and get it to work. First I will try to avoid the errors, though.

I couldn't find anything on this forum about the 'Lists' object name problem above, so if you have any insights, please let me know.

Here is the log:

There could be a issue on a earlier upgrade.  I want try to discript you what could happens.

If on a earlier Upgrade the execution was rin as i.e:

Create Table {databaseOwner}[Lists]  this would create the Table as i.e. dbo.Lists but you are using an objectQualifier like "test"  you could have a issue on later upgrade when the table would alter i.e:

Alter Table {databaseOwner}[{objectQualifier}Lists

This want try to alter the table dbo.test_Lists  but it could not be find.

Other issue can be on missing databaseOwner statements if you using a other schema as "dbo" as your databaseOwner.  As exsample:  the databaseOwner is "username"  you have set on your web.config file and the obejectQualifier is "test".

Create Table {objectQualifier}Lists want create the table dbo.test_Lists

So this could make issue on running the instance about if a module want read from the Lists table it searches to the table username.test_Lists but could not find it and you get a time out and the SQL server can caused a 100% of CPU usage about searching the database.

then of you run a upgrade with a correct Alter of the list table with this script

Alter Table {databaseOwner}[{objectQualifier}Lists] want alter the Table username.test_Lists which could not find on the database.

{databaseOwner} and {objectQualifier} are placeholders that value are set on the web.config file.

Tables with missing one of those placeholders have to be deleted on a later upgrade and must recreate with the correct settings. The content of the wrong table had to moved to a tempTable before deleting the old Table and had to be moved to the new created table.  On the end the tempTable must be deleted.

Spocs, Views and Functions with missing thos placeholders could be altered if it is not missing on the naming of it.  Otherwise the have to be deleted and also be recreated with the correct script.

Attention!
The databaseOwner and objectQialifier value on the web.config File could not changed after a completet installation, due to the SQL Server security.  If you want to do this, you have to manuelly altered the complete artifacts (tables,spocs,views, functions) of the database, which is a high time stamp work!

To check your database you could manuelly check it by getting the databaseOwner and objectQualifier values and check all tables naming, the programmed functions, spocs and views on the database.

Notice:
The aspnet tables do not use the databaseOwner and objectQualifier placeholders about the are running as system service. So they are always created under the use of the "dbo" !

As a new install DNN 5.4.4 and 5.5.0(Beta) the executed scripts running without any issues using a objectQualifier and special databaseOwner.

I hope this could help you to solve your issue.

I have the same problem, have been trying upgrade dnn4.9.5 since 5.1.x untill now 5.5.1 with the same error.

System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: 'PK_EventLogMaster' is not a constraint.
Could not drop constraint. See previous errors.

   at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlInternalConnection.OnError(SqlException exception, Boolean breakConnection)

   at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.ExecuteNonQuery()
   at DotNetNuke.Data.SqlDataProvider.ExecuteADOScript(String SQL)
   at DotNetNuke.Data.SqlDataProvider.ExecuteScript(String Script, Boolean UseTransactions)

If I upgrade from 4.9.5--> 5.0.1, I got the error message like above, clicking in "Access to your portal " will get "an error occur"  just like Thomas described.
Not sure how can I fix that, have to stay with 4.9.5 for long time now.
