I have been trying to get an old, stone-aged, version 3.2.2 upgraded to the latest version for a few weeks. I purchased a copy of an auto-upgrade tool that will take it from 3.3 to the latest, but I can't get an upgrade from 3.2.2 -> 3.3 to work. In the latest attempt, the upgrade completed without error and the site loaded, but I can't login as host--I get an error that says "Login Failed, remember that Passwords are case sensitive". I am working on a copy of a production site and I can login to that site, so I know I have the correct password. Also, I tried using the "Send Password" button, but I get an error, "There was an error retrieving your password. No password was sent." when I click the link to send the password.

To get where I am know I:
Copied the folder and database
Changed the web.config to point to the test database
ran the site and made sure it worked
copied the 3.3 upgrade files on top of the test site
renamed the web.config to web.config.old
renamed release.config to web.config
edited web.config to contain the database name and connection info
browsed to the site and watched the upgrade
clicked on the launch portal link and saw site come up
It is at this point that I tried to login and got the error

I am guessing that I am still missing something in the web.config, but I don't know what it is.

Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like you didn't merge your config files.  You cannot just replace the files.  Your specific problem is probably with the MachineKey node.  Also, take a look at my suggested upgrade path in my signature.

Thanks for your help. You were correct, I just needed to update the machine code rows.

Make sure you manually merge any other changes too.  This ceases to be an issue after version 04.06.02 though.
