For future / next versions of DNN ... wishlist:

1. Menu items to:

a) for normal user to toggle on/off a module in a particular pane (just like in admin/host mode). eg. have a toolbar with 5 modules that show different data representations. Then the user clicks on a button and that module pops up in the left-pane. He clicks on the button again and the module disappears. It's nothing to do with being a page author, it's to simulate a windows application toggling toolbar/panels.

b) load in a module in a particular pane (just like in admin/host mode), but for normal user. Again this has nothing to do with being a page author. it's to simulate loading a child window in a windows application Multiple-Document Interface. I could have a explorer bar (which is in an independent frame than DNN) and click on files/records and they load up in the right-pane. They will be shown as modules, piled up in the right-pane and will have a close & focus button. When I close the module, the module is removed from the pane.

2. give "admin/host mode" moving modules around... to normal user. As again, this is nothing to do with page author. I want to reprogram DNN so that it functions or simulates closely to a normal typical Multiple-Document Interface windows application. We have a menu-bar, toolbar and click on buttons or menus and they load up modules in the layout pane. then the normal user can drag 'n' drop the modules around to his liking.

3. allow each user to have personalised layout.... this is to complement all the above. each user will operate DNN as a typical MDI (Multiple-Document Interface) web application, where the documents are the modules.. which are supposed to be like child-windows. normal user can change skin/theme and drag 'n' drop and all settings are saved.

how easy/hard would this be to hack/change/reprogram DNN.. or would it be easier to have this Multiple-Document Interface like type in future versions of DNN? I like DNN and think it looks very professional. however I need a system like this to create a web application.

  1. a) use permissions or other restrictions. panes are for visual grouping, not for content restrictions
    b) while placing a module, you have to select the pane - I don't understand your request
  2. placing the modules is done by a page author. As the location is identical for all viewers, allowing this to users would be really confusing.
  3. have a look at Smart-Thinker Homepage (http://smart-thinker.com)
