Can't you edit the language files directly (ftp)?

Sebastion,

NTFS File permissions are fine and consistent with the other working sites.

I decided to pull out a couple of old time favorite troubleshooting tools, Process Monitor and Process Explorer.

Process Explorer revealed something I am certain is important because it only happens on the problem site. I just cannot find any additional detail to help me pinpoint.

While watching the w3wp.exe process for the problem site (they all run under different unique user accounts and application pools) I noticed the following. When I click on one of the language edit icons, the vbc.exe process is spawned as a subprocess of the w3wp.exe process, terminates and the error in DNN comes up. (the full path is c:\windows\microsoft.net\framework\v3.5\vbc.exe)

When I do this on the sites which are running OK, the vbc.exe process is not spawned at all.

I know the vbc.exe process is typically spawned right after any changes to the site, in particular when new files are added or removed from the \bin folder. But the above consistently occurrs when I try to edit the portal language, for example.

I guess that this might indicate the vbc.exe process is never able to fully compile something it needs to, but in using Process Monitor, I cannot see any errors or failures on file access. So in your experience, does this raise any thoughts or flags for you?

@Yehuda, Yes, I am certain I could edit these files and create new ones manually. That is not the point. The language editor should work, so something is broken and needs to be resolved. There could be other hidden problems that will continue to cause problems, as well.

Speaking of something else possibly being broken, the solution explorer page coms up, but displays this error: 'undefined' is null or not an object
