There is a known upload vulnerability in old DNN versions, you need upgrading at least to 4.9.5.

As I was just preparing myself for a DNN Upgrade I came across this blog which highlighted a security loophole in older versions of DNN:

http://blog.aggregatedintelligence.co...

Curiosity led me to trying the loophole in www.dotnetnuke.com and seems like I have successfully managed to upload 'sampletext.txt' file under 'Users/255/01/-1' folder. Please advise if this is expected behaviour...if so how does this stop executable files being uploaded on the site?

We have just been discovering .jpg and .txt files on our server with embedded asp code.

Sorry...seems like my login details were retained from the forum. Perhaps that might be the reason for me getting permission to upload the file.

Arif there is a vulnerability in previous versions of dnn lower then 4.9.5 and combined within iis semicolon bug, this can result shell placements on your website. You need to secure your site by upgrading, or hardening old version if you can't afford to upgrade due to reasons such as legacy modules. Users can drop me an email, so that i can help you during upgrade and hardening. There is also another ASP.NET security issue, which i recommend upgrade to 5.5.1 at the time of writing this post.
