Hello everyone,

User Registration in Unavailable at this time

My name is Sal for those who don't know. I have been a user here for a bit and would like to share and experience I had on a Godaddy Shared Hosting account. For those who don't know what a shared hosting account is. Shared hosting is when you share an IP address and your host resolves the http:// for you. Dedicated is your have your own IP. I was on  my shared account with no problems of any kind. DNN ( DotNetNuke ) sent out the update from 5.0. now I started out around version 4. So I am not and expert but not a knewb. Any way I installed the update not knowing that the smtp would un-resolve and make it so people could not Register. Imagine my fear when people could not register on a site were I just spent a bit of money on modules and custom modules as well. Once I saw that user registration was unavailable I asked Godaddy Tech support what was wrong. The continued to inform me that it was an issue with DNN and not their problem. There was nothing they could do to help me. I asked around a bit and could not get a clear answer to my problem as no one either new or would take the time to try and figure it out. Six Months go by with this problem hopping that a fix would come in for the problem. Godaddy continued to blame DNN. Not wanting to give up with much invested in DNN and I don't give up very easy. I found a new host. http://www.ihostasp.net. Now here is the kicker. Kim took the time to help me being knowledgeable in DNN himself and fully testing all updates. Kim knew straight away that when updating or with any new DNN versions the Registration would show as unavailable without the SMTP set up. Now what took only 2 minutes of Kim's time gained him a loyal customer. And Godaddy lost a loyal customer. To think that two minutes of some ones time saved me so much grief. Now not being new to DNN I felt pretty silly that I did not know this answer myself. But it is sometimes the smallest of things that get past all of us. I do not down Godaddy in anyway on being a host or company. I will say some of the people there are not knowledgeable enough to handle some tech support issues or they simply don't care. Either way I kept looking around for the camera as I thought I was being punched. At the end of it all I watched a video blog on Godaddy from Bob Parson the Founder of Godaddy. His entire speech was about how people don't normally change things in life unless they are given a very good reason to change. I guess I fell into that category because after six months of trying to find a fix I gave up. Now I also lost six months of hosting money as well as I prepaid for two years. I could not get a refund as I no longer hold an account at that bank. So I got stuck for the monies that I paid as well. I am not upset about any of this only disappointed. At the end of the day I am not really upset with anyone only wanting to share my experience with you all. Hopefully this sheds light on an issue that was so easy to resolve but no one had the answer for. No even in the DNN forum. I felt the need to share this experience with people as I had some people chiming in with much experience in DNN much more than myself and they did not know what it was either. I am a strong believer in DNN and everyone else that participates in Open Source. I hope this helps anyone that my run into a similar problem.

Sal
